BCCCOP Member Earns Pride Award Through Diligence In Birthday Project
By Linda Dueser

Fine Arts Faculty Receptionist and Typist Deb Reed earned the Pride Award for her diligence in heading the Barton County Community College Office Professionals’ Birthday Cake Fund-raiser. Human Resources Director Julie Knoblich presented the award at the General Staff Meeting on Nov. 9.

Deb Reed Pride AwardKnoblich explained that Reed is in charge of organizing the BCCCOP Birthday Cake Project/Fund-raiser, which provides funds for the BCCCOP scholarship presented each year to an office technology student. Proceeds from the Birthday Cake Project also will be used to help BCCCOP host the Association of Kansas Community College Office Professionals’ spring conference. Tentatively, the year for Barton’s turn to host the event is 2010.

Reed sends all parents of students living on campus a form asking  if they would like to participate in this project to make their child’s birthday special while the student is away from home. Reed organizes the responses, orders the cakes, balloons, cards, plates, forks and napkins and arranges for a photographer if the parents request a photo. She also arranges for a delivery time, often checking with an instructor to find out the best time for the student, then assigns BCCCOP members to deliver the cake. Reed also participates in deliveries when she’s needed.

“As you are aware, the mission of Barton Community College is to deliver educational opportunities that improve the lives of students, meet the workforce needs of the region and strengthen its communities,” Knoblich said in presenting the award.

Reed helps fulfill the college’s mission by going beyond the expected standard to provide a service to students and their parents, and this service reflects “exemplary commitment to the college,” Knoblich said.
