Barton Community College has announced recipients of the Dan and Nancy Peschka Honorarium Scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year. The Barton Community College Foundation raises funds for honorarium scholarships named each year in honor of an individual or individuals who have given generously to the college through their service and their gifts. The Peschkas were honored through contributions to the honorarium with the traditional auctioning of the old buffalo head, “Old Bill,” at the 2008 Big Benefit Auction.

The following Barton students are recipients of the Dan and Nancy Peschka Honorarium Scholarships:

Bushton

Amanda Riggs, a 2008 graduate of Quivira Heights High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in early childhood education. Her scholarship is an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in powerlifting, Kansas Association for Youth, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and Q-Club. She is the daughter of Doug and Karen Riggs, Bushton.

Clay Center

Kayla McVaugh, a 2009 graduate of Clay Center Community High School, is a freshman business major at Barton. Her scholarship is an $800 honor award. She is the daughter of Richard McVaugh and Tracy Overby, Clay Center.

Ellinwood

Malinda Snow, a 2009 graduate of Ellinwood High School, is a freshman English education major at Barton. Her scholarship is an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in volleyball, danceline and Drug Free Youth in Town. She was named to the honor roll and was a Sunflower Bank Community Ambassador and Junior Rotarian. She is the daughter of Brian and Gladys Snow, Ellinwood.

Kelci Sieker, a 2007 graduate of EHS, is a second-year sophomore majoring in early childhood education. Her scholarship is an $800 honor award. At Barton, she has been involved in Hilltop Singers and the Early Childhood Advisory Board. She is the daughter of Jerry and Marcy Sieker, Ellinwood.

Rachel Ringering, a 2009 graduate of EHS, is a freshman graphic design major at Barton. Her scholarship is an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in basketball, volleyball, school musical and golf. She served on the Student Council and was named to the honor roll. She lettered in basketball and volleyball and she received the 3A League Art Show Student Choice Award. She is the daughter of Cindy Ringering and Russell Ringering, Ellinwood.

Jared Poppelreiter, a 2008 graduate of EHS, is a sophomore music major at Barton. His scholarship is an $800 honor award. In high school, he was active in Mystic Blues, choir and band. While attending Barton, he has been involved in Hilltop Singers, Concert Choir, Jazz Band, Pep Band and Prairie Winds Community Concert Band. He was named to the Dean’s List his first semester at Barton. He is the son of Mike and Debby Poppelreiter, Ellinwood.

Great Bend

Jessica Bayless, a 2008 graduate of Great Bend High School, is a sophomore at Barton planning to major in diagnostic imaging. Her scholarship is an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in Pep Club as a board member and she was also involved in Kayettes, volleyball and choir. She was named to State Honor Choir. She also received the Park PTA Scholarship. She is the daughter of David and Shari Bayless, Great Bend.

Jacquelin Martin, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in nursing. Her scholarship is an $800 honor scholarship. In high school, she was active in soccer. She is the daughter of Erin and Randy Martin, Great Bend.

Haley Piland, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman education major at Barton. Her scholarship is an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in Future Educators of America, Kayettes, softball, Pep Club and Spanish Club. She was named to the honor roll and lettered in softball for three years. She is the daughter of Randy and Brenda Wetzel, Great Bend.

Jericah Ravenstein, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in vocal music education. Her scholarship is an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in Madrigal Pops Singers, A Cappella Choir, Drama Club, Freshman Mentoring Program and bowling, for which she holds the game record, 246. She was named to the honor roll in her freshman and senior years. She is the daughter of Rhonda and Keith Ravenstein, Great Bend.

Sarah Reavis, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in nursing. Her scholarship is an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in basketball two years, volleyball and swim one year, Kayettes three years and Drama Club one year. She is the daughter of Keith and Sandra Reavis, Great Bend. She previously attended Colby High School.

Michael Smolik, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton. His scholarship is an $800 honor award. In high school, he was named to the honor roll and received an academic letter. He also received a letter for swim team his freshman year. He is the son of Ken and Kris Smolik, Great Bend.

Hoisington
Doris Roat, a 2009 graduate of Hoisington High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in nursing. Her scholarship is an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in basketball for one year, Science Club for two years, Cardinal Crew for two years, track for four years, and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America for four years. She was named to the honor roll and lettered in track all four years. She is the daughter of David and Brenda Roat, Hoisington.

Abbie Schremmer, a 2009 graduate of HHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in computer networking. Her scholarship is an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, International Club, tennis and softball. She was named to the honor roll all four years and was named All-League Honorable Mention Outfielder. She is the daughter of Tim and Melissa Schremmer, Hoisington.

Newton

Suzy Mills, a 2009 graduate of Newton High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in dental hygiene. Her scholarship is an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in varsity cheerleading as captain and FFA. She was named to the Principal’s Honor Roll. She is the daughter of Lyndi Stineman-Salas and Ray Salas, Newton.

Salina

Laura Rowlison, Salina, a 2003 graduate of St. John’s High School in Beloit, is a student in Barton’s Medical Laboratory Technician Program. Her scholarship is an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball and Quiz Bowl. She was named to the B Honor Roll. She is the daughter of Don and Rita Rowlison, Beloit.
