Barton student Bill Mckown was a talented young sculptor in the early 1970s, and showed great potential during his early years in college. However, a car accident in 1975 left him paralyzed from the neck down, an incident that changed him for the rest of his life.
That still wasn’t enough to hold back his artistic drive, as McKown was recognized with “Best of Show in 2D” for his unique print of a grape leaf at the Shafer Art Gallery juried student exhibit, which will be available for the public’s viewing until April 22.

Ellinwood artist Robert Joy’s art, which will be featured at the Shafer Art Gallery’s Oct. 2nd opening, can be identified loosely as having an ever-moving and ever-morphing style. In a fairly current phase of his artistic mood, there has been a focus on the insect world. “My art is just a mood and a feeling. I was just inspired to draw them when I was drawing something else at some point,” Joy said. My focus on bugs is going to disappear eventually, and it will change into something else. It’s just an evolution and now bugs are a part of that.”

Patrick, who is the featured artist in the exhibit, began working for Barton in 1998, and he is currently the Administrative Assistant to the Dean of BCC Fort Riley Learning Services and Military Operations. Barton Community College’s enrollment figures show an overall 5.2 percent increase from summer 2010 to spring 2011. That increase comes off the heels of 10 percent enrollment growth the preceding year. This year’s total credit-hour output set a new enrollment record with 107,158 credit hours compared to last year’s previous record of 101,877 credit hours. The new record also signifies that Barton continues its upward trend in credit-hour production for the fourth straight year.
