Science Bowl

4th ANNUAL JACK KILBY SCIENCE BOWL

Barton Community College will be hosting its 3rd Annual Jack Kilby Science Bowl this year. Schools will register participants to compete in teams of 3. Teams will answer multiple choice questions, read by a moderator, about the various science disciplines including biology, chemistry, and physical science. At the end of the tournament 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes will be awarded.

Format:

Scratch paper, pencils, and calculators will be provided for each team member.

1. The moderator will read a question.

2. Each team will be given 30 seconds to buzz in and answer the question.

3. If a team buzzes in, then they will have 5 seconds to answer the question (it is important to note that only the first answer will be accepted).

a. If a correct answer is given, then that team will be awarded a point.

b. If no answer is given, or an incorrect answer is given, the other team will be given any remaining time (out of the 30 original seconds) to answer the question.

4. If the other team buzzes in, then they will have 5 seconds to answer the question (again, it is important to note that only the first answer will be accepted).

a. If a correct answer is given, then that team will be awarded a point.

b. If no answer is given, or an incorrect answer is given, then no points are awarded for that question.

5. Repeat until all questions have been read.

6. The team with the highest score wins the round. (In the case of a tie, a tie-breaker question will be given to determine a winner).

Each team member MUST register individually online choosing Science Bowl as their SESSION 1 choice. IN ADDITION, an email MUST be sent to Jessica Vsetecka (vseteckaj@bartonccc.edu) containing the names of team members, instructor (with phone number and e-mail address), and high school being represented before the registration deadline.

Science Bowl team registrations will NOT be accepted after October 5th to ensure that appropriate accommodations can be made for the work involved. Interested participants MAY participate in both the Science and Math Bowls if they wish. Please see the Math Bowl page for instructions and details.
