Medical Transcriptionist

The medical transcription program at Barton is a 33-credit hour certificate that prepares you for a career in medical transcription. Several of the courses in this program are offered online, during the evening, or by arrangement, allowing students to complete homework on their own timeline. Students who enjoy grammar, proofreading, and paying attention to detail would thrive in this program!

Medical transcriptions listen to dictation recordings provided by a variety of healthcare professionals. Those recordings are then transcribed according to the appropriate format of the document. Typical documents might include medical reports (discharge summaries, history and physical examination reports, operative reports, progress notes, etc…), letters, memos, or other administrative material such as meeting agendas and minutes. Recordings are usually accessed by computer or other digital system.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical transcriptions make the mean wage of $13.01/hour or $27,060 annually in the state of Kansas. Employment of medical transcriptionists is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2014.

The healthcare field continues to demand professionals each and every day. As older age groups continue to receive medical treatment with more tests, the appropriate documentation is needed. With the growth of electronic documentation, medical transcriptionists will be in high demand to amend patients’ records and edit for formatting and grammar.

Students in Barton’s medical transcription program receive hands-on experience as a medical transcriptionist. Other areas of emphasis include medical office ethics, medical office management, employment preparation, and customer service training, Not only does Barton train students to become good medical transcriptionists, we also train students to become valuable assets to an organization, no matter where they are employed.
